Fans have been waiting for Capcom to release new Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma games for years, and Devil May Cry 5 will finally launch next month. But unfortunately for those holding out hope for Dragon’s Dogma 2, it seems that game was put aside so Capcom could focus on Devil May Cry 5‘s development instead.
As explained by Devil May Cry 5 game director Hideaki Itsuno, he was given the choice between starting development on Devil May Cry 5 or Dragon’s Dogma 2, and as we now know, he ultimately chose to work on Devil May Cry 5. While this is good news for fans excited to see demon slayer Dante make his triumphant return to gaming, it no doubt has to come as a disappointment to those who have been waiting for Dragon’s Dogma 2 since the first game released in 2012.
On the bright side, this could be an indication that Itsuno will start work on Dragon’s Dogma 2 after Devil May Cry 5 finishes development. Itsuno did indicate that he has ideas for Dragon’s Dogma 2 and that he is already preparing to start development on his next project, though he stopped short of revealing whether Dragon’s Dogma 2 is his next game or not.
Of course, it’s also possible that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is being worked on by other developers at Capcom besides Itsuno. Capcom could have moved forward with development on the game after Itsuno chose to make Devil May Cry 5 instead, though that is just speculation at this time. And since Itsuno directed the original Dragon’s Dogma, Capcom may be hesitant to give the project over to another developer.
In the meantime, it’s worth pointing out that Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the enhanced version of the original Dragon’s Dogma, and if it sells well on the Switch, it could give Capcom more incentive to move forward with a proper sequel.
Whether or not we ever see Dragon’s Dogma 2 remains to be seen, however, and fans will just have to wait and see what Itsuno decides to make next.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not announced and may not even be in active development.
